Active Communication in English (ACE) is an intensive 5-week course designed for students who want to improve their International English skills to enhance personal communication across diverse cultures.

English Instruction: Students will have 18 classroom hours per week. Courses include Listening and Speaking with Confidence, Powerful Presentations, American Culture and Current Events Reading and Vocabulary. Students will immerse themselves in university campus life as they improve their English skills in vibrant Silicon Valley.

Beyond the classroom:  Fridays are designed to move students beyond the classroom walls on their own with structured excursions throughout the Bay Area. Experience the local scene at the downtown Farmers’ Market, Great America, The Tech Museum, The Winchester Mystery House, flea markets, etc. (Additional admission fees may apply.) Students will report back in class about their experiences.

ACE Details

Admission Requirements:

  • iGateways accepts students that are over 18 years of age or older and/or a high school graduate; however, 16 and 17 year old applicants may be eligible to take the ACE program. Please contact us for eligibility.

Course Details:

  • 18 hours of classroom instruction
  • Friday Excursions (Beyond the Classroom) – Students will go to various places in the Bay Area in small groups to try out their language skills without their teachers’ help.  
  • 4th of July BBQ & Fireworks (Optional)

Grade Report

International Gateways courses are non-credit bearing. Students receive a progress report with course grades at the end of each term. Our grading system is A, B, C, D, F.


Certificate of Completion

International Gateways students with passing grades (A, B, C, or D) receive a “Certificate of Completion” at the end of the term

I am 17 years old. Can I apply for this program?

Yes, 16 and 17 year old students may be eligible to take the ACE program as long as they have adults or guardians with them while studying in our program. Please contact us for eligibility.

Do I need to get an F-1 visa to enroll in the ACE program?

Yes, U.S. Immigration regulations clearly state on their website that individuals enrolling in U.S. schools must get an F-1 visa. To view the website, click here.
