The Admission Process

Please select the method based on your status:

F-1 Visa Applicant

Please follow these steps, and you can also check our How to Apply Video:

  1. Apply Online

    • Go to the Apply Now page and choose the program and start date that best fits your schedule — we recommend applying at least one month prior to the start of the program so you will have plenty of time to submit your required documents, apply for an F-1 visa and make travel arrangements.

    • Complete the online application and pay the $100 non-refundable application fee.

    • After you have completed the application and paid the application fee, our admissions office will send you an email with a User ID and PIN number for the Admission Tracking Site (ATS). The ATS is the fastest and most efficient way to check your application status.

    • On the ATS, you can see which documents are required in order to complete the application process, as well as read more information regarding the admissions process. Please fax or email all required documents to us at least one month prior to the program start date. We do not require that the original documents be sent to our office; faxed or scanned copies are acceptable.

      Fax: 408-924-2669
      Email: ig-admission-group@sjsu.edu

All F-1 visa applicants are required to submit the following documents in order to be admitted to our program:

      • Copy of the biographical page of your passport
      • Bank statement in English, showing proof of $23,000 in US Dollars
If the bank statement belongs to a sponsor/family member, they will need to complete our Financial Statement. You can find that form here.
    • After the admission office has received all required documents, we will send a Tuition Payment email with detailed payment instructions and an individual “payment ID.” Follow the instructions to make the full tuition payment.

  2. Receive I-20 and Apply for F-1 Visa

    • After the tuition payment has been processed, the I-20 will be issued and sent to the mailing address listed on the online application. The ATS will show the exact date the I-20 was mailed, with a tracking number if you chose the express mail(for a fee) on your online application. Otherwise the I-20 will be sent by regular mail at no charge.

    • After the I-20 has been mailed, we will post your SEVIS ID Number and our SEVIS School Code on ATS. You can use this information to pay your SEVIS Fee and make your F-1 visa appointment. Contact your local US embassy and schedule an appointment for F-1 Visa interview. Please check the Visa Hints page for more information.

  3. Housing, Health Insurance and Check-in

After you get your F-1 visa, there are still a couple of things you can do before coming to California.

    • Pack all the important documents you will need for the program.

    • Check our Housing page to see the available housing options.

    • Purchase qualifying health insurance.

All international students are required to show valid proof of health insurance. Make sure to have a copy of your health insurance policy that meets the CSU requirements, or be prepared to purchase the plan we offer in our office. If you would like to use a health insurance plan from your home country, it is important to send us the policy 5 days before the last day of check-in.

      Fax: 408-924-2669
      Email: ig-healthins-group@sjsu.edu

Finally, all new students are required to report to the iGateways office prior to the start of the program in order to complete the registration process. The Welcome Letter you received with your I-20 shows the last day to check-in. Bring the following required documents with you and expect at least one hour of checking in:

    • passport
    • stamped I-20 (do not bring photocopies)
    • I-94 card (you will receive this on the airplane)
    • proof of health insurance that meets the CSU requirements
(or money to purchase the plan we offer in our office). See this link for more information.

If you do not have these documents, you will not be able to check in.
